COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES FOR THE LISTENER
- Plan ahead.
- Position yourself to be close to the speaker. This helps with hearing and speechreading.
- Ask for cues when the context is changing.
- Ask people to talk slower.
- Move away from background noise.
- Repeat what you heard to see if you have understood correctly.
- Be specific in what you heard rather than saying “What?”
- Be patient!
- Most importantly: Develop a sense of humor!
COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES FOR THE SPEAKER
- Get the person’s attention before speaking.
- Face the person. The best distance is about three feet away at the same level.
- Position yourself so that light is on your face and there is no bright light glaring into the listener’s eyes.
- Keep your hands away from your face.
- Do not chew gum or smoke while trying to communicate.
- Speak slowly and clearly. Do not exaggerate mouth movements.
- Do not shout.
- Rephrase rather than repeat a sentence.
- Use facial expressions and gestures to give contextual cues.
- Remove background noise when possible.
- Do not use sentences that are too long or complex.
- Give specific information and ask the listener to repeat the information to verify correct reception.
- Do not let the intensity of your voice fall at the end of a word or sentence.
- Be patient and relax.
